Can’t I simply turn off images in my email settings to avoid email tracking?

For those who are concerned about email tracking and email privacy, Google (and other providers) suggest that you turn off images to prevent email tracking. Unfortunately, although it will prevent one kind of tracking, turning off images is an incomplete protection for several reasons:

  1. Your emails messages are now bereft of images and won’t display as they were designed. This can be highly inconvenient as it breaks the format of the message you want to read and you might be tempted to download some of the images you received.
  2. Turning off images does not remove tracking from the links in the message. Your activity on these links can still be tracked.

Senders removes the invisible trackers hidden in your emails while displaying the harmless visible images in the message.
